UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Performances

We promote Korean traditional performing arts and share the value of intangible cultural heritages through Korea’s UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity performances.

UNESCO operates the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity system to recognize and protect the importance of intangible heritages, the source of humanity's cultural diversity.
Starting with the inscription of Royal ancestral ritual in the Jongmyo shrine and its music in 2001, Korea has 20 items listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, including the Gangneung Danoje Festival and Pansori epic chant.

The UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Performances Project is contributing to the modernization of Korean traditional arts. Plus, it allows people to enjoy them in their daily lives by introducing and supporting Korean traditional cultural content, such as performances of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage items and reproductions newly created in a modern fashion.

Performances The Great Legacy Meets Today

Since 2018, The Great Legacy Meets Today has been held regularly in the vicinity of the National Museum of Korea, where visitors can enjoy and experience both Korean intangible and tangible cultural heritages at the same time.
During two seasons, in spring (May to June) and autumn (September to October), our UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity Performance Series presents 40 diverse Korean traditional intangible cultural performances listed on UNESCO. Performances include Yeongsanjae (A Korean Buddhist ceremony), Jongmyojeryeak (the Music for Royal Ancestral Ritual in the Jongmyo Shrine), Pansori epic chant, and Namsadang Nori (Vagabond troupe's performances), adding on to the Korean traditional cultural experience programs, and children education programs.

Support Outstanding Performance Contest

We hold a creative performance artwork contest based on items listed on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Five works of art will be selected and offered a chance to perform again on “The Great Legacy Meets Today” stage.
